ProtectionWeb launched in April 2024 as a sister publication to defenceWeb, South Africa's established defence news portal, with Robert Mace as publisher and Nivashni Nair as editor. The launch pitch was that South Africa's security sector employs nearly three million people and carries a government peace and security budget approaching R250 billion a year, yet gets narrow news coverage, and defenceWeb editor Guy Martin framed the new title as filling that gap ahead of the May 2024 national elections. The masthead ran daily news and features across cyber security, border security, civil security, correctional services, policing, fire and safety, maritime security, mining, and technology. Its content also ran in parallel as a ProtectionWeb category and author account on defenceweb.co.za, where 280 tagged posts survive. That mirror stopped on 2 October 2025 and the standalone site stopped on 15 December 2025. Today, ProtectionWeb is dormant rather than active, with an archive covering SAPS performance and oversight, the Border Management Authority, correctional services, gender-based violence, cybercrime and the private security industry, from their base in South Africa, while defenceWeb continues publishing daily. One interesting fact: the last three articles it published were all recycled, two from the nonprofit GroundUp and one from its own parent title four months after defenceWeb ran it, so the site was running on syndicated copy before it stopped.
