KIEM-TV signed on 25 October 1953 as Eureka's first television station, launched by William B. Smullin, and its call letters stand for "Keep Informed Every Minute." It carried CBS until 1985 with secondary NBC and ABC affiliations along the way, and has been the market's NBC affiliate since. The station is owned by Marquee Broadcasting through Marquee Broadcasting West, Inc., which acquired it from Northwest Broadcasting, and it operates alongside low-power CBS affiliate KVIQ-LD channel 14, on air since 1 April 1958. The two share studios on South Broadway at Spruce Point in southwestern Eureka, with KIEM's transmitter on Kneeland Road southeast of the city. Redwood News is the shared news brand for both, and the station produces about 13 and a half hours of local newscasts a week, running 24 hours a day since April 2020. Today, Redwood News is mainly focused on Humboldt County government and the Eureka and Arcata city councils, public safety and courts, wildfire and coastal weather, Yurok and other tribal affairs, North Coast infrastructure and broadband, local business and schools, and high school and Cal Poly Humboldt sports, from their studios in Eureka, California, United States. One interesting fact: the KIEM call sign came from a radio station that signed on in Eureka in 1933 and spun off the television operation two decades later; the radio side became KRED in 1961, the two were sold to different owners in the 1970s, and that original frequency now runs an oldies format as KEJB.
