The Music Network was founded in May 1994 by talent manager John Woodruff as a paper-based weekly for the Australian music industry, serving record labels, retailers, radio and television programmers, sales representatives, artist managers, publishers and promoters. Woodruff sold it in January 2009 to Peer Group Media, owned by Adam Zammit, with Jade Harley installed as managing editor and the site relaunched on 8 June 2009. Weekly print ended in March 2013 and the title went fully online. Jake Challenor acquired it in 2017 and served as publisher and editor, The Brag Media bought it on 28 February 2022, and Vinyl Group Ltd (ASX: VNL) acquired The Brag Media in a deal completed early in 2024 worth $8 million in cash plus $2 million deferred, funded by an $11 million investment from WiseTech Global chief executive Richard White. Since February 2025 the masthead has sat under the Vinyl Media publishing banner alongside Rolling Stone Australia, Variety Australia, Mediaweek, Tone Deaf, Refinery29 Australia and Concrete Playground. Today, The Music Network is mainly focused on Australian radio airplay and ARIA chart data, physical and digital sales figures, label and executive appointments, music copyright and industry policy, touring and live event business, and an industry jobs board, alongside interviews with local and international artists and label executives, from their headquarters in Crows Nest, New South Wales, Australia. One interesting fact: in September 2009 the magazine published a chart called "TopSwaps," which ranked songs by how many times they were downloaded from file-sharing sites each week, so the title was running a piracy chart alongside its legitimate sales and airplay data.
