Founded in 1953, WPSU and its radio counterpart, radio.wpsu.org, were established by Penn State University. It was conceived as a gift from the Class of 1951 to provide students with hands-on experience in radio communications, while also serving the community with unique programming. Currently, WPSU is undergoing a transition, with a proposed sale of its operating assets to WHYY, a public media organization based in Philadelphia. This move is intended to allow Penn State to focus on its core educational mission while ensuring the continuation of public media services in Central Pennsylvania. WPSU and radio.wpsu.org offer a diverse range of content, including local news, educational programs, and cultural features. They broadcast programming from National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio Exchange (PRX), and American Public Media, as well as producing their own local content. Their mission is to foster discovery, enrich learning, and strengthen the community through public media. One interesting fact: The radio station's original call sign was WDFM, and it was initially limited to playing jazz, folk, Broadway musicals, Western, and classical music due to agreements with local commercial radio stations. Rock music was not widely played until around 1970.
