No, I think genetic engineering is not ethical when done for physical attributes or those for cognitive attributes. This makes the natural tendencies of the child looked down upon.

The unethical means that it would take to accomplish proper research outweigh the proposed benefits. Even if such effects were to be proven in animals, there is a risk those effects would present differently in humans. This is a risk too great to ask one to take, especially considering those undertaking the risk would largely be unborn children who have no option to consent.  Less

However, if genetics are being engineered for physical qualities and benefits, then I think this is taking advantage of this ability to alter DNA. There needs to be regulations and supervision in place to make sure these practices are not being abused.  Less

These altercations should not be done solely because someone wants to change their appearance. Animals can be harmed in the process, and it might not have the same effect on humans.  Less

It depends on what the genetic engineering is for. In cases of one’s health, I think that the benefits do outweigh the ethical concerns. However, I do not think the benefits outweigh the ethical concerns in cosmetic and non-life-threatening cases.  Less

I think genetic research and testing is very important especially in helping to find cures to diseases, particularly genetic ones. But at the same time it is important to do so with ethical parameters. I think when it comes to medical cases like cures or treatments it would be okay to use genetic engineering, but besides that, the ethical concerns might take over.  Less

In the case of GMOs for instance, i believe the ethical concerns of disrupting ecosystems and such can be taken with a pinch of salt as this occurs quite rarely. However, I become more ethically concerned when the genetic engineering/cloning of humans comes into play. Parents in IVF can currently choose to discard an embryo with birth defects or disorders and to what extent is the line drawn around this selection of ‘preferred’ characteristics? What happens when parents want to choose or modify an embryo with certain genes for hair thickness/colour for convenience? It’s evident that a clear line needs to be drawn around how far genetic engineering can go and in what contexts it can be instituted.  Less

I worry that if such practices got into the wrong hands, it could be used in very unethical ways. I’m hesitant to give this question a definitive yes or no, but a maybe seems pretty appropriate.

On the other hand, many of these crops have lost a lot of nutritional value, and corporations have engineered them in ways that prevent the average person from growing their own.  Less

For instance, certain pesticides have been shown to cause serious health issues. Generic engineering could easily be another case like this with unintended, negative consequences.  Less
