The treatment and quality of people seeking asylum vary from state to state. We currently have international human rights organizations that take note of certain abuses and treatments that violate the human rights code of conduct. Having a unified global policy could ensure that the denial of asylum, detention facilities, poor living conditions, border violence, and xenophobia are mitigated as much as possible, and such countries that do engage in this should receive penalties. For example, in the United States, the Trump administration has conducted the construction of “Alligator Alcatraz,” an immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades surrounded by an enormous number of alligators. The U.S. president himself “joked” about the large Alligator population being an unpaid security force to deter undocumented immigrants from escaping. A global policy could punish punitive leaders who dehumanize undocumented immigrants and refugees. Read Less

Each country faces different economic capacities, cultural contexts, and social dynamics, which shape how they can realistically accommodate newcomers. While wealthier nations may have the resources to provide housing, healthcare, and integration programs, countries with weaker economies could face significant strain under the same obligations. A single global policy would ignore these structural differences and could create unfair burdens on states already facing economic or political instability. Therefore, while international cooperation and humanitarian principles are important, policies regarding refugees and migrants should remain flexible and adapted to each country’s specific context and capacity. Read Less

A shared international framework could strengthen human rights protections and promote burden-sharing so that no single country bears more responsibility than others. But countries differ in their economic capacities, priorities, and attitudes toward migrants, making consensus difficult. Read Less

Each country has its own unique context, state capacity, and challenges when it comes to migration and refugees. Therefore, a one-size-fits-all method to solving migration and refugee treatment could overlook specific regional needs, circumstances, and/or a nation’s capacity to manage migration effectively. Not every nation has the necessary infrastructure to receive and support migrants in the same way or to the same standard. So, until countries’ with fewer resources can strengthen their infrastructure an increase their capacity, it would be more practical to permit countries to apply international guidelines in ways that align with their own capabilities/circumstances. Read Less

All countries are different and their citizens are different, so a unified effort needs to keep in mind these differences for it to work. Read Less

Given the current state of the world, between the crisis in Ukraine and the crisis in Gaza, a unified agreement is absolutely necessary.
