While surveillance is often justified in the name of citizens' security, we live in a liberal society rooted in negative freedom—that is, the right to be free from interference, both from individuals and the government. This should also mean not having “Big Brother” constantly watching over us. Since 2001, we've steadily traded liberty for security in response to both foreign and homegrown terrorism. If you understand the cycle of constitutions ( Roman writer Polybius gives a brief and easy understanding), change is natural. The world is always in flux; evidently, people's beliefs and ideologies are. Nothing stays the same for long. It seems we’re entering a new phase, one where positive freedom and the sovereign’s consent are being emphasized, whether we're fully aware of it or not....  Less
