Rather, countries should only consider responsibility for their own elections and the impact of social media on them in a way that aligns with their culture, their politics, and the needs of their people without making concessions in order to have a unified front. The potential for censorship in issues of regulating social media–especially in a way that will impact other countries–may do more to introduce misinformation than to preserve factual and informative political influence. Read Less

I can’t see why it would hurt, but I also don’t know if it would be worth the effort to pass.

Due to countries having many different restrictions on social media a unified approach would not be a solution. I believe that within every country there should be a sort of regulation on social media regarding elections, but I am not quite sure what that would look like because it could be seen as censorship and many would not agree with it. Read Less

I don’t think it would be very productive to make a unified effort because social media culture changes in differet cultures.

Trying to mitigate the harmful effects of social media on elections and all democratic processes, frankly, is a great and valuable effort. But, all countries certainly do not need to agree on how exactly this should be done, just that we should do it. Social media is different from country to country, elections are different from country to country, and some “democratic” elections are not as free and fair as others anyway. We should all resolve to tackle it, but maybe not in a way that requires unanimous commitment to one method. Read Less

The idea to regulate social media usage during elections sounds great, but is definitely unrealistic. Like one previous commenter mentioned, it could be seen as censorship and as a restriction on free speech. Additionally, there are numerous ideas for what social media should look like during elections, making it seem slightly impossible to find a singular, unified view among countries. Read Less

No, as each country has different election laws. It should be country specific.
