After living in a U.S. state that receives a large amount of its income from tourism, the impacts that it has on the land are prevalent. This can be seen internationally, too, with the debris and harm to natural sites in the ocean or even historical sites as well. It is up to the governing agent to regulate tourism’s impact not only on natural sites but also on its people. Read Less

Many of our most valuable ecosystems like coral reefs and rainforests are not divided by borders therefore the damage caused on them by tourism is often shared by more than one country. Global regulation could also help hold countries accountable and prevent situations where one country is doing more than others. Read Less

However, I also think there is value in establishing a minimal global baseline that all countries agree to follow. A basic international standard could prevent extreme cases of environmental destruction while still allowing each country to design its own detailed policies. In that sense, full global regulation is unnecessary, but a shared minimum threshold for environmental protection could be reasonable. Read Less

Many ecosystems, such as coral reefs, ancient forests and mountain resevers, face degradation caused by overcrowding, pollution, waste, and unsustainable. Because tourism flows are transnational and often driven by global markets, local governments alone may lack the capacity, expertise, or political will to implement strong protections. In the sense, international bodies can provide unified standars , monitoring mechanisms, and cross-border cooperation needed to safeguard ecologically sensitive regions.

However, regulating tourism through international organizations is complicated by issues of sovereignty and unequal economic dependence. Many countries rely heabily on tourism revenue, especially small island states and developing nations, and may resist external rules that could reduce visitor numbers or impose costly environmental standards. Furthermore, a global regulatory framework risks creating one-size-fits-all polices that fail to account for local ecological conditions, cultural contexts, and community needs. Read Less

Global oversight can set consistent conservation standards and support sustainable practices. It would help allocate resources for site preservation. Read Less
