Any alternative seems very exclusionary and discriminatory toward people with disabilities.

It is also fairly clear that market incentives do not sufficiently promote digital accessibility, given the current lack of it. As such, it is the government’s responsibility to intervene and ensure that companies implement measures to make their resources more accessible. However, I chose “maybe” because I don’t think ALL companies should be mandated to be accessible. Only companies that provide resources that are vital for everyday living, like banks Read Less

I said maybe but I lean more towards yes because digital accessibility ensures that everyone, regardless of ability has equal access to information, services, and different opportunities.

With the increasing importance of digitization in today’s world, this would be very beneficial for those with disabilities. Having better accessibility features like captions, transcripts, and alternative text can end up benefiting all users. Some people may be concerned about small start-up businesses being required to comply with this, however I feel like the government would be able to offer them some kind of support or extra resources. Read Less

The term ‘edge case’ refers to a problem that only comes up in extreme situations outside of the expected use of a product. In other words, edge cases are instances that can often be ignored or postponed. People with disabilities are commonly handled as edge cases, as are the elderly who are often less adept at navigating the constantly-developing conventions of the digital world. Because so much of the digital world is necessary for living, and even more is necessary for living comfortably, companies must be pressured in some way to make their services accessible rather than sweeping people under the rug as unfortunate yet unprofitable cases. Read Less

I do not know a lot about this topic but I think anything that helps accessibility is a good thing for all citizens.

Yes, because as more things move online, disabled people should be able to access the same things as abled bodied people

Creating and ensuring digital accessibility is going to be a fundamental way of ensuring access to that need. It’s equitable and fair to require companies to make their services available to those with disabilities. And yes, it’ll take some more effort ad be a little bit more costly up front. However, I imagine it will also benefit the companies in the long run given that they’ll be expanding their consumer base in doing so. Read Less
