I’m skeptical on how such an agreement would have equity between nations, as I think some have a higher export of single use plastics and thus a phasing out will naturally be more difficult for them and also more expensive, because they don’t just have to stop using and producing them, they would also have to transform entire infrastructures to support other types of production to avoid their economies, and thus citizens, suffering. I think it might be more effective to, instead of simply having global agreements, have countries develop concrete and actionable plans and incentives put in place for their industries and supply chains to move towards non single use plastics, as that would still get the job done while taking into consideration the individual context and difficulties that nation in particular may come up against. I also believe more technological innovation should go towards repurposing existing machinery, as that would alleviate and accelerate transitions from single use to biodegradable plastics.Read Less

I assume that climate change is an international and urgent problem that we must address together. Plastics are produced from fossil fuels and create severe environmental damage, from carbon emissions to microplastic pollution in oceans and food chains. They also threaten human health, as microplastics have already been found in our bodies. On the social side, single-use plastics encourage a throwaway culture. Phasing them out would push innovation in sustainable packaging and prevent the free-rider problem since plastic pollution crosses borders. For these reasons, I would answer yes.Read Less

Plastics take lifetimes to disintegrate and disappear so future generations will have to deal with the trash that our generation is leaving out. We need to think about the future and act now.Read Less
