The gig economy has forced people to work without labor unions or any ability to organize, given the separation, independence, and autonomy of modern-day gigs. Governments shouldn’t play a role in everyday work life if you are working in the gig economy, but they should make sure that large corporations, i.e., Amazon, Uber, or Postmates, are not taking advantage of their employees. My experience with the gig economy has proven that when large companies have substantially more power than their employees, they often inevitably take advantage of this. From my perspective, the decline of union membership, which the government has supported since the 70’s, and the rise of the modern gig economy, is not by any means a coincidence. Read Less

Governments should set basic rules to protect gig workers, such as fair pay standards, access to benefits, and clear worker protections, while still allowing flexibility in the gig economy.

This is because the economy is built on flexibility, independence, and autonomy–three things many workers value and rely on. Overregultion has the potential to reduce these opportunities, limit innovation, and push companies to restrict gig work altogether. This is why I think governments should play a role, but a more muted role in the gig economy. Read Less

Because gig work often falls outside traditional employment classifications, governments must clarify legal definitions of employment status to ensure that workers are not nusclassified solely to avoid labor protections. Clear statutory criteria, rather than case-by-case ambiguity, help establish hen gig workers are entitled to baseline rights such as munimum pay, workplace safety protections, and anti-decrimination coverage.

A central responsibility of government regulation is to guarantee fair and predictable compensation. This can include establishing munimum earnings that gig worked or task time, adjusting for expenses such as fuel, equipement, and insurance that gig workers typically bear themselves, Transparency requirements are also critical: platforms should be required to disclose pay algorithms, fee structures, and penalty system so workers can understand how their how their earnings are calculated and contest unfair deductions or deactivations.

Governments should also ensure access to portable benefits that are not tied to a single employer platform. Rather than forcing a binary choice between independent contractor and full employee status, regulators can mandate platform contributions to pooled benefit systems covering health insurancem workers’ compensations, unemployment proctection, and retirement savings. This approach reflects the multi-platform reliaty of gig work while preventing the complete offloading of social risks onto individual workers.

Finally, governments play a key role in balancing innovation with social protection through adaptive and enforceable regulation. This includes strengthening labor inspection capacity, enabling collective representation. Read Less
