AzerNews was launched in 1997 as Azerbaijan's first English-language newspaper, aimed at the diplomatic community, foreign investors and the energy sector arriving in Baku as the country opened its Caspian oil fields to international partners. It has published continuously since, marking its fifteenth anniversary in 2012, and in that same year became the first Azerbaijani newspaper admitted to the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, the industry body formed from the 1948 press freedom organisation and the newspaper technology institute IFRA. The operation is registered in the Binagadi district of Baku and publishes both in print, distributed digitally through PressReader, and online across sections covering the nation, world, business, energy, Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, analysis and culture. It was named Company of the Year and launched an iPad application as it moved into digital publishing. Today, AzerNews is mainly focused on Azerbaijani domestic politics and presidential activity, oil and gas markets and Caspian energy, economy and trade, the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process and regional transport corridors, alongside culture and sport, from their base in Baku, Azerbaijan. One interesting fact: Its largest single national audience is not Azerbaijani. American readers account for about 11.8 per cent of visitors, nearly double the 6.1 per cent inside Azerbaijan, with Turkey and the United Kingdom next.
AzerNews is ranked 8,163 among other media sources and has an average of 176,100 monthly visits according to
