Founded in 1949 by Sarkes Tarzian, CBS4 Indy (originally launched as WTTV) came into being to bring television to Central Indiana outside of the big city limits. The idea sparked when Tarzian, a brilliant engineer who owned a factory that manufactured television parts, wanted to prove that TV signals could work in smaller towns, not just major cities. He built the station in Bloomington, Indiana, to test his equipment and help sell the TV tuners his company produced. Today, the station is owned by Nexstar Media Group, one of the largest media companies in the United States. Today, CBS4 Indy is run by a team of local journalists and is mainly focused on Indianapolis Colts coverage, Indy 500 racing updates, local politics, and weather. They are based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and serve as a primary source for sports fans and residents across Central Indiana. One interesting fact: A unique fact about CBS4 Indy is that for the vast majority of its history, it wasn't a news station at all. For over 60 years, it was an independent station famous for airing cartoons, movies, and legendary local children's shows like "Cowboy Bob." It only transformed into a major 24-hour news outlet and the official CBS affiliate in 2015, making it a relatively "new" news source despite being on the air for over 70 years.
