The Economic Times began publication on 6 March 1961 as an English-language business daily, part of a publishing house whose roots run to 3 November 1838, when The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce appeared as a bi-weekly. That paper became The Times of India in 1861 and was acquired in 1892 by the English journalist Thomas Jewell Bennett and Frank Morris Coleman through their joint stock company, Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. British ownership ended in 1946 when the industrialist Ramkrishna Dalmia took over, and the group has been controlled by the Sahu Jain family since. Bodhisatva Ganguli edits The Economic Times, whose daily circulation was 269,882 in 2023. ETTelecom is one of the industry verticals run through Times Internet, the group's digital arm founded in 1999, alongside similar desks for auto, health, retail, energy and brand equity. Today, ETTelecom is mainly focused on Indian telecom operator news, spectrum and regulatory developments, 5G and network infrastructure, handset and device business, policy from the Department of Telecommunications and TRAI, and industry events, from their base in Mumbai, India. One interesting fact: The parent company has for years taken equity stakes in companies in exchange for advertising space, an arrangement it calls private treaties. Its own filings once showed investments in more than a hundred companies, sixty of them listed, alongside the newspapers that cover them.
