The York Daily Record traces to 1796, making it one of the oldest continuously published newspapers in Pennsylvania, though the modern paper dates its founding to 1896. It nearly disappeared in the early 1970s. The paper was bankrupt, with a local bank facing a loss on a $400,000 loan, when a newspaper broker took the deal to Jimmy D. Scoggins, an experienced publisher who had never set foot in York. Scoggins bought it and saved it. Under later owner Buckner News Alliance the paper built a reputation for investigative reporting and community engagement projects that drew state and national recognition. Ownership passed to MediaNews Group in 2004, then Digital First Media, then Gannett in 2015. Gannett merged with GateHouse Media in August 2019, keeping the Gannett name and becoming the largest newspaper chain in the United States. Randy Parker is editor. Today, York Daily Record is mainly focused on York County local news, watchdog and investigative reporting, government and courts coverage, high school and college sport, food and entertainment, published seven days a week in print and continuously online, from their base in York, Pennsylvania. One interesting fact: It has shared a joint operating agreement since 1990 with The York Dispatch, a paper that spent roughly 115 years aligned with Republican politics. The two competing titles now sit under the same owner and appear in analytics data as each other's closest competitor.
