Founded in 2003 by the Education Development Center (EDC) as a USAID-funded project, Eye Radio (originally Sudan Radio Service) came into being to offer vital news and information to South Sudan. The idea sparked from a need to provide news summaries and music during a critical time, including the airing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, fostering peace and awareness. The station was initially established in Nairobi, Kenya, and later began broadcasting from Juba, South Sudan. Today, it continues to operate with support from Internews and USAID. Today, Eye Radio is based in Juba, South Sudan, and broadcasts 24 hours a day in English, Arabic, and several national languages. They cover a wide range of topics including national news, political developments, live peace talks, sports shows, and entertainment. With 11 repeaters across South Sudan, the station reaches many communities, providing essential information and programming to its listeners. One interesting fact: A unique fact about Eye Radio is its demonstrated power to influence government action. In 2019, following a report by the station on police extortion, the South Sudanese government arrested 85 police officers and fired eight of them, highlighting the station's significant role in accountability and public service.
