Founded in 1953 by the Norbertine Fathers of St. Norbert College, WBAY came into being to bring the first television service to the people of Northeast Wisconsin. The idea sparked when the religious order, which already operated a successful radio station, decided to expand their educational and community mission into the new world of video broadcasting. They launched the station to serve the Green Bay area with news and entertainment. Today, the station is owned by Gray Television, a large media company that operates local stations across the United States. Today, WBAY (Action 2 News) is run by a team of local journalists and meteorologists and is mainly focused on local breaking news, severe weather alerts (especially winter storms), politics, and sports (with a huge focus on the Green Bay Packers). They are based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and serve viewers throughout Northeast Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One interesting fact: A unique fact about WBAY is its origin as a college-owned station. Unlike most commercial TV stations started by big businesses, WBAY was founded and operated by Catholic priests for over 20 years. The profits from the TV station actually helped fund the construction of many buildings on the St. Norbert College campus during the mid-20th century.
