Founded in 2009 as part of the Urban One media family, iPower 92.1/104.1 FM came into being to serve the Richmond community with music and news that resonated with Black culture. The idea sparked when Cathy Hughes, the founder of Urban One, began her media journey in 1980 with a vision to create a dedicated voice for African-American listeners that was missing in mainstream broadcasting. Currently, the station is still owned and operated by Urban One, which has grown into one of the largest Black-owned broadcasting companies in the United States. Today, iPower Richmond is mainly focused on hip-hop and R&B music alongside a variety of news updates. Based in Richmond, Virginia, they have made a name for themselves as a go-to source for both the latest music hits and important stories affecting the local community. One interesting fact: A unique fact about iPower’s parent company, Urban One, is that its founder, Cathy Hughes, became the first African-American woman to lead a company that is publicly traded on the U.S. stock market. Additionally, the station is involved in the "ONE Voyage" cruise experience, which partners with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to support education while hosting a massive "party with a purpose" for its audience.
