Founded in 1921 by Frank J. Russell Sr., The Iron Mountain Daily News was created to serve as a new family newspaper for the local community. Russell, who was already a publisher for another journal, came up with the idea after purchasing and merging three older local papers—the Tribune, the Gazette, and the Iron Mountain Press—to form one central news source. Today, the publication is owned and operated by Ogden Newspapers Inc. of Michigan, which acquired the company in the late 1990s. Today, The Daily News covers a wide variety of topics, including local politics, business, and sports, ranging from high school volleyball to professional baseball. They also report on lifestyle and entertainment news, such as community picnics, art classes, and local concerts. Based in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the outlet serves as a primary source of information for residents across the Upper Peninsula region. One interesting fact: A surprising part of the newspaper's history is that its original building was completely destroyed by a massive fire in 1922, less than a year after it opened. Despite losing almost all their equipment to the heat and the collapse of the building, the team managed to keep the paper running by temporarily printing at a different plant in Marquette until they could build a new, permanent home.
