The newspaper behind Luxembourg Times was founded three days after press censorship was abolished. Luxemburger Wort began publishing on 23 March 1848 as an aggressively Catholic opposition paper, combative towards the liberal state, and its creation is regarded as the birth of political Catholicism in Luxembourg. It was owned for most of its life by Saint-Paul Luxembourg, held by the Archdiocese of Luxembourg, and the paper retains a Catholic leaning and an alliance with the Christian Social People's Party. Mediahuis, the European publishing group, acquired Saint-Paul in May 2020, and the company was renamed Mediahuis Luxembourg in July 2021. Luxembourg Times is the English-language edition of that title, with Virgule serving French readers and Contacto serving Portuguese speakers. It moved onto the group's CUE publishing platform on 6 June 2023, the first Luxembourg title to launch with an intelligent paywall. Today, Luxembourg Times is mainly focused on Luxembourg national politics and government, finance and the fund industry, business and the economy, cross-border and EU affairs, and community news for the country's large international workforce, from their base in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. One interesting fact: A German court ordered its publisher in May 2025 to stop describing a Russian billionaire as the owner of a superyacht seized in Hamburg under EU sanctions. The ruling came from Hamburg, on an English-language article published in Luxembourg.
