A group of Thai journalists launched The Voice of the Nation on 1 July 1971, the first English-language newspaper founded and run by Thais rather than by foreign owners, and the name was later shortened to The Nation under the motto "Thailand's Independent Newspaper." The paper changed considerably in 1991 when several Thai journalists defected to it from the Bangkok Post. Its publisher Nation Group grew into one of the country's largest media companies, listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, running two digital television stations, three national newspapers, a university and printing and logistics operations. In January 2018 the group was taken over in a hostile acquisition by Sontiyan Chuenruetainaidhama, founder of the conservative outlets T News and INN News. The print broadsheet published its final edition on 28 June 2019, leaving nationthailand.com as the sole platform. The company is owned by News Network Corporation PCL. Today, The Nation is mainly focused on Thai politics and policy, business and banking, regional Southeast Asian affairs, tourism, lifestyle and sport, published in English for Thai readers, expatriates and international investors, from their base in Bangkok, Thailand. One interesting fact: Only about 18 per cent of its readers are in Thailand. The largest single share of its audience sits in the United States, with Australia third, so a Bangkok newspaper is read mostly by people who are not in the country it covers.
Nation Thailand is ranked 4,937 among other media sources and has an average of 647,400 monthly visits according to
