Founded on June 1, 2006 by Lance Guma, a UK-based Zimbabwean journalist and entrepreneur, Nehanda Radio came into being as a not-for-profit Zimbabwean internet radio station and news platform dedicated to providing 24-hour news coverage of Zimbabwe for audiences inside the country and across the global diaspora, at a time when independent media inside Zimbabwe was heavily suppressed by the Mugabe government. The station takes its name from Mbuya Nehanda, the revered Shona spirit medium and revolutionary leader who inspired the first Chimurenga resistance against European colonization in 1896 and 1897. Today, Nehanda Radio operates under Megabyte Media Limited, headquartered in Corby, United Kingdom, with Guma continuing to serve as editor, and adheres to the IPSO Editor's Code of Practice. Today, Nehanda Radio is mainly focused on Zimbabwean politics, human rights, governance, society, entertainment, and diaspora affairs, publishing 24 hours a day from their base in the United Kingdom. One interesting fact: Despite being physically based in Corby, England, Nehanda Radio has built a Facebook following of over 606,000 followers, making it one of the most widely followed Zimbabwean news platforms in the world and giving an exile-run diaspora outlet an audience that rivals Zimbabwe's largest domestic media organizations.
