RTHK began broadcasting on 20 June 1928 as GOW, an amateur radio service, becoming ZBW in 1929 and Radio Hong Kong in 1948. It gained independence from the Government Information Services in 1954, added television in 1970 and went online in 1994. Founded under British administration and often compared to the BBC, it became the only publicly funded broadcaster on Chinese soil whose charter guaranteed editorial independence, and its coverage of the 2019 protests drew complaints from the Hong Kong government, the police and Beijing. In February 2021 the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau published a review finding weak editorial accountability, and the government installed Patrick Li, a career administrator with no media experience, as director of broadcasting six months before his predecessor's term ended. Eddie Cheung Kwok-choi now holds the post. RTHK remains a government department. Today, RTHK News is mainly focused on Hong Kong local news, government policy and the legislature, Greater China, world news, finance and sport, published in English alongside Chinese services across radio, television and online, from their base in Kowloon, Hong Kong. One interesting fact: In 2021 the broadcaster removed thousands of its own archived videos more than twelve months old from social media, material produced with public funds. Its staff union objected that the content belonged to the public.
