Founded in 2004 by Paul Tan, born Paulvinder Tan Teck Kheong on October 27, 1984 in Kuantan, Pahang, paultan.org came into being as a personal WordPress blog about the Malaysian automotive industry, launched while Tan was working in web development to support his family after dropping out of university following the death of his father from cancer when he was 19 years old. By 2006 the blog had grown into Malaysia's most popular automotive portal, generating between RM5,000 and RM6,000 per month through Google AdSense and outperforming the motoring portals of established publications including The Star. In 2008 Tan co-founded Driven Communications Sdn Bhd alongside Harvinder Singh Sidhu to formalize the operation, expanding the brand to include sister sites oto.my and CarBase.my, before Singapore-based used car platform Carro acquired the company in June 2023. Today, paultan.org operates under Carro, managed by Driven Communications Sdn Bhd, headquartered in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Today, paultan.org is mainly focused on Malaysian and ASEAN automotive news, new car launches, test drives, price updates, industry developments, and road tax and insurance guides from their headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. One interesting fact: Despite being started by a university dropout working from home with no journalism background or institutional backing, paultan.org became Malaysia's number one automotive website and by March 2026 ranked second globally in the Vehicles - Other category on SimilarWeb, outranking the automotive portals of major Malaysian newspapers and regional competitors alike.
Paul Tan's Automotive News is ranked 2 among other media sources and has an average of 3,800,000 monthly visits according to
