Punch Newspaper was founded in 1971 by James Aboderin, an accountant, and Sam Amuka, a journalist. The two friends saw a need for a daily newspaper that would provide comprehensive and unbiased news coverage to Nigerians. They named it “Punch“ with the idea that it would deliver news with impact. Today, Punch Nigeria Limited, a family-owned business, continues to operate the newspaper and its online platform, with Wale Aboderin, son of James Aboderin, serving as the chairman until his passing in 2018. Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Punch covers a wide range of news topics including politics, business, sports, entertainment, and technology. As one of Nigeria's most widely read newspapers, it provides both national and international news, with a strong focus on Nigerian affairs. The online platform, Punchng.com, has expanded the newspaper's reach, offering real-time news updates and interactive features to a global audience interested in Nigerian and African news. One interesting fact: Despite being one of Nigeria's oldest and most respected newspapers, Punch has embraced digital innovation. In 2019, they launched a fact-checking initiative called “Punchcheck“ to combat the spread of misinformation, making them one of the first major Nigerian news outlets to integrate fact-checking as a core part of their digital strategy.
Punch Newspapers is ranked 702 among other media sources and has an average of 12,690,000 monthly visits according to Similar Web.
