The paper began as the Sussex Agricultural Express, founded in Lewes in 1837 to serve a farming county, and merged with the Sussex County Herald in 1938 to become the Sussex Express and County Herald. It has covered Lewes and much of East Sussex for nearly two centuries, running four editions with heavy local sports coverage. Ownership passed through Johnston Press, whose assets were acquired by JPI Media in November 2018, and then to National World plc in January 2021. In February 2022 its online operation was folded into SussexWorld, a county-wide digital platform that amalgamates 16 previously separate local news sites including the Chichester Observer, Eastbourne Herald, Hastings Observer, Crawley Observer, Mid Sussex Times and West Sussex County Times. Gary Shipton is editor-in-chief across the Sussex titles. Today, Sussex Express is mainly focused on Lewes and Wealden district news, council and court reporting, crime, traffic and transport, local business and property, community events and local sport, published weekly in print and continuously online through SussexWorld, from their base in Lewes, England. One interesting fact: The domain no longer serves its own masthead. Visit sussexexpress.co.uk and the page loads as SussexWorld, the county platform, with the historic Lewes title surviving as a section rather than a site.
