Founded in 1868 by E.F. Hoge as The Atlanta Constitution, the newspaper merged with The Atlanta Journal in 2001 to become The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC). The idea was to create a comprehensive news source for the growing city of Atlanta. The AJC has changed hands several times over its long history and is currently owned by Cox Enterprises, a privately held global company based in Atlanta. Today, the AJC is the largest newspaper in the Southeast, covering a wide range of topics including local and state news, politics, sports, business, and entertainment. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, it serves as the primary news source for the metropolitan Atlanta area and much of the southeastern United States. The AJC has won numerous Pulitzer Prizes for its journalism and continues to be a respected voice in both print and digital media. One interesting fact: A unique aspect of the AJC is its role in popularizing the iconic comic strip "Pogo" by Walt Kelly. The AJC was one of the first major newspapers to publish the strip, helping to launch it to national fame in the 1950s.
