Founded on August 22, 1980 as a merger of two predecessor publications, The Georgian representing Sir George Williams University and The Loyola News representing Loyola College, The Link came into being when those two institutions merged to form Concordia University, creating a single independent student-run publication to serve the new university's community. The publication is owned by The Link Publication Society and funded through a student fee levy and advertising revenue, maintaining editorial independence from both Concordia University and the Concordia Student Union. Today, The Link publishes bi-weekly in tabloid format during the fall and winter semesters and daily online, led by Editor-in-Chief Geneviève Sylvestre, operating from Room LB-717 of the Concordia University Library Building in Montreal, Quebec. Today, The Link is mainly focused on Concordia student union politics, campus affairs, Montreal community news, Palestinian solidarity and social justice advocacy, and local and national political issues affecting the Concordia student community from their base at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. One interesting fact: Despite being a student publication with a print run of only 5,000 copies, The Link has been in continuous publication since 1980 and reaches over 40,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff through 175 on and off-campus distribution points, giving it a physical distribution footprint comparable to many professional regional newspapers while operating entirely on a student fee levy without corporate ownership or advertising dependency.
