Tuoi Tre, meaning Youth, was founded on 2 September 1975, four months after the fall of Saigon, following a suggestion made by Communist Party General Secretary Le Duan during a working session with the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union. It began as a weekly with a print run of roughly 10,000 copies and grew into the largest-circulation daily newspaper in Vietnam, reaching about 500,000 copies a day. Ownership has never changed: the paper is published by the Ho Chi Minh City branch of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the youth wing of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and remains that organisation's official mouthpiece. The print family includes the daily, the weekly Tuoi Tre Cuoi Tuan and the satirical Tuoi Tre Cuoi. news.tuoitre.vn is the English-language edition, previously published at tuoitrenews.vn, sitting alongside the Vietnamese Tuoi Tre Online. Today, Tuoi Tre News is mainly focused on English-language coverage of Vietnamese politics, business and investment, society, travel and sport for foreign readers and the diaspora, drawing largely on the parent newsroom's reporting, from their base in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. One interesting fact: the same newsroom that carries the Communist Youth Union's masthead also publishes the country's only comics and satire magazine, Tuoi Tre Cuoi, which translates as Youth Laughs.
