Founded in 1922 by Texas A&M University (then known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas), WTAW came into being as one of the very first radio stations in the state. The idea sparked when the university's engineering and physics departments wanted to experiment with new radio technology to broadcast agricultural reports and live football games to farmers and alumni who couldn't travel to the campus. Originally run by students and professors, the station was eventually sold to private investors in the 1950s. Today, the station is owned and operated by the Bryan Broadcasting Corporation.
