Thinking realistically, while a global standard for decomissioning nuclear power plants globally could improve everyone’s safety, nuclear capabilities are closely linked to national security and military power–making countries hesitant to accept international oversight. Basically, because nuclear technology regularly overlaps with defense interests, governments with nuclear power will most likely be unwilling to fully comply with or enforce standards (and lose power). Therefore, while this strategy could yeild saftey benefits, cooperation and international approval may be limited. Read Less
