For starters, subsidies cost a lot of tax-payer money so governments need to be really selective and prioritize industries.
Apart from this, giving subsidies can create distortions in the global economy affecting developing countries the most, as they do not possess the same resources to inject money into their economies to compete globally.
A third issue is that giving subsidies and affecting the market can also create tensions with other global economies and trade partners.
So, a lot can go wrong with subsidies, but if national security is compromised then governments need to take action. It’s just that they have the difficult job of maintaining global stability.

This would ensure that the US is no longer reliant on nations in the Middle East. The volatility of international oil would be less harmful to the American people. Another example is emerging technologies like AI and space travel. These new technologies are so important that our nation must ensure we are at the forefront.
