However, these sactions should be carefully examined and need to be approved by all countries, it cannot be skewed to one country alone, this would make the international community crumble. Read Less

However as a matter of practical politics we can see that enforcement of sanctions would be extremely difficult, and for the international system to run smoothly countries try to avoid too much finger pointing- after all, what counts as a violation of human rights? What definitions do we use? The question just seems like it would inevitable crumble in the face of moral relativism. Read Less

The definition of human rights is also clearly laid out in the universal declaration of human rights and therefore defining it shouldn’t be too difficult. Imposing sanctions is better that doing nothings. I also think holding the offenders to trial at the ICJ under extreme cases (for instance like what happened to the Nazis) may be extremely beneficial to reach some semblance of ‘justice’. Read Less

Sanctions are often imposed on countries that are the enemies of the West and while they are frequently valid, Western countries too commit human rights violations so sanctions would be extremely widespread. Of course something should be done to countries that violate human rights, but the international community imposing sanctions would certainly be a disaster because it requires so much accountability and fairness that I just do not see occurring. Read Less

However, this is difficult because many countries violate human rights to some extent, and we cannot afford to impose sanctions on all of them. There should be restrictions of some sort. Read Less

If a government is found to be consistently and/or blatantly violating human rights there should be some action taken against them. Sanctions are one of the most effective means of making collective action as they put a massive economic burden on the country affected, incentivizing them to shift their policies. Due to this, it is reasonable to surmise sanctions are an acceptable response to these violations. Read Less

While I think it could be effective, I feel these would be used very often as many countries are violating human rights around the world. I also wonder what the potential consequences would be for a country that imposes sanctions on another, and if the country is able to handle that if it were to happen. Read Less
