Although this is an opinion piece, it is still harmful as it creates a harmful narrative around cash welfare. The title suggests that cash welfare was regularly being used to pay for adult items such as cigarettes and alcohol, but it provides not statistic to prove its point. Rather, this article details a loophole where recipients could have used their money to purchase these items, but that does not necessarily mean that it was being used. I believe it is also important to mention that there were already bans in place for use of this kind of aid in liquor stores and smoke shops, so it was not a loophole that was easy to exploit.
