I think it sounds like a good idea overall, but I am not sure of the negative implications it might bring on so I hesitate to say yes or no.

I’m not a scientist but I do know that objects in orbit move around the planet at very high speeds, so trying to prevent collisions with satellites or other orbital structures may not be feasible if say a piece of junk is flying around at thousands of miles an hour. There’s also a lot of junk in order so there’s a question of where to even start cleaning. And if an international body is established, it’ll need substantial funding. Launching people or assets into orbit is highly expensive and the process itself takes time, so anyone flipping the bill for this needs some incentive to support it. Read Less

That would doom us to extinction so it is imperative that the United Nations Security Council wield significant authority to ensure the survival of the human race by regulating space travel. Read Less

On the other hand, it may raise the question of whatever happens to the debris in space, which can lead to more research being done to better understand the situation, which can lead to revealing consequences and an urgent need to regulate space debris. For the reasons I listed, I can’t come to a conclusive decision on this matter. Read Less

Every launch comes with an unavoidable release of debris, which makes future launches potentially dangerous due to possible collisions. It’s important to regulate it now, when it’s still safe to launch more objects, than try to mitigate it later when it becomes a much larger issue. Read Less
