Firstly, I think that requiring military service can help to promote patriotism and unity. It helps to create a community that is united in a common cause. I also believe that it would make a nation a more formidable and powerful opponent. This could potentially scare foreign governments from invading or threatening your nation because you have a large and well-trained population ready for service. However, I think that making it a mandatory thing would bring more problems than benefits to countries who are not used to that. I think it would exacerbate anti-government feelings instead of fostering patriotism.
I feel like governments need to offer incentives like financial aid towards education or something similar to encourage young people to serve. Or set up a minimum quota for people who need to do military service, if the quota is not met then call random citizen who just turned 18 to serve. Read Less
The military can be a very negative environment for a lot of people, so I don’t think it should be involuntary to serve in the military.

The military attracts an extremely dedicated and disciplined corps of individuals, and those who cannot choose to sign up for such a lifestyle may be more harmful than helpful. If members are unmotivated, they may not foster the strength and willpower necessary to be a successful and productive soldier. Mandatory service also has the potential to create more anti-patriotic sentiments than unity if choice is taken away. During times of crisis, it has been shown that the draft has provided necessary troops, but a strategy such as this should not be implemented all the time. Read Less
